This ferry connects Cheung Chau, Mui Wo, and Peng Chau. From Chi Ma Wan Pier, a scenic stroll awaits. The path from Chi Ma Wan Pier leads you past the Chi Ma Wan Correctional Institution. This institution has a unique history. It was originally intended to house Russian refugees. However, it became Hong Kong’s first open prison in 1956. Continue along the narrow Chi Ma Wan Road, usually quiet and serene. Trees line the path, offering shade. A few houses dot the landscape. The path curves left, revealing a broad valley opening to the sea. A tidal creek meanders through abandoned fields with scrub and damp patches. Keep an eye out for the feral water buffalo that roam this area. As you walk from Chi Ma Wan Pier, the road climbs steeply but briefly. You’ll see a turn for the Chi Ma Wan Country Trail on your left, a popular spot for mountain biking. Further along, on the right, a rough footpath leads to a hidden gem. A newly built pavilion offers a quiet respite, although trees obscure the view. The road then dips down towards Pui O. You’ll pass small farmhouses and elegant Spanish villas. The road eventually runs alongside a beach. At low tide, you might spot ghost crabs scurrying across the sand. The road curves towards Pui O, passing another tidal creek. This creek is a haven for mangrove creatures like mudskippers and fiddler crabs. Little egrets hunt for fish and crabs in the shallows. You might also see sandpipers and kingfishers. Crossing the creek, you can turn left to reach Pui O beach. Or, take the old stone footbridge beside it. This bridge leads to a concrete path through damp fields where more water buffalo graze.
