Contemplate this a town where a battle’s outcome shaped a nation’s capital. That town is Bladensburg. Originally called Garrison’s Landing, Bladensburg got its current name to honor Thomas Bladen. He was governor of Maryland from 1742 to 1747. Bladensburg’s history is etched in the very ground beneath our feet.
Bladensburg was established in 1742. It was meant to be a regional commercial hub. The Maryland General Assembly authorized its creation. The town commissioners were allowed to buy 60 acres. These acres would be divided into 1-acre lots. The rules stated that a house of at least 400 square feet had to be built on each lot. It also needed a brick or stone chimney within 18 months of the sale.
In 1747, Bladensburg became a designated tobacco inspection and grading port. This boosted its importance. The Market Master’s House stands as a reminder of this era. Bladensburg was a seaport during the colonial period. It thrived as a center for trade and commerce.
Bladensburg is most famous for the Battle of Bladensburg in 1814. This War of 1812 battle saw a sitting president, James Madison, ride into the fray. The American defeat was a major setback. It paved the way for the British to march on Washington. They burned many public buildings. Some called it the greatest disgrace ever dealt to American arms.
The town’s role as a seaport declined. The Anacostia River silted up. Larger ships could no longer reach Bladensburg. The town remained a vital crossroads. Routes north to Baltimore and Philadelphia crossed here. So did routes south and east to Annapolis and Upper Marlboro. Westward lay the District of Columbia.
Bladensburg was once the original terminus of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Passengers headed to Washington had to switch to carriages. In 1835, the B&O extended its line into the District of Columbia. This led to a sharp decline in Bladensburg’s passenger traffic.
The Spa Springs were a major attraction from the 18th through the 20th centuries. People believed the springs could cure illnesses. Visitors came from all over the region. They could reach the springs via the Washington, Spa Spring and Gretta Railroad. Another attraction was the Bladensburg Dueling Grounds. Many famous duels took place here until after the American Civil War.
Bladensburg was incorporated in 1854. Schools and churches were built. The first Freedmen’s Bureau school for African Americans opened in 1866. The early 20th century saw significant growth. The first two residential sections of town were built in 1914 and 1917. These were named Decatur Heights.
In 1999, Bladensburg joined Colmar Manor and Cottage City. They collaborated with Prince George’s County. The Port Towns Revitalization Initiative was created. It aimed to create a common identity. It also encouraged business development and improved infrastructure.
Today, Bladensburg is home to the Bladensburg Waterfront Park. It sits at the meeting point of the Northeast and Northwest Branches of the Anacostia River. The park offers a place to reflect on the town’s past.
From the bustling port to the infamous battle, Bladensburg has seen its share of triumphs and tribulations. Its story is a microcosm of American history. It reminds us that even small towns can play a pivotal role in shaping the course of a nation.
