Dafnes Förvandling Sculpture

“Swans, swans everywhere.” You might find yourself thinking that as you stand right here, in front of the Dafnes F\u00f6rvandling Sculpture. This imposing, five-meter-tall abstract work by Bengt Amundin, is perhaps the most striking piece of public art in T\u00e4by. Its theme? Transformation. In the Greek myth of Apollo and Daphne, Zeus transforms the nymph Daphne into a laurel tree to save her from the advances of the god. The sculpture’s sweeping curves, like a stylized swan, certainly resonate with the graceful movements of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet. The sculpture is balanced on a slender base, its form seemingly expanding outwards in a centrifuge-like whirlwind. A vertical element extends upwards like a swan’s neck, adding to the ballet-like impression. The sculpture’s volume is divided into twisting convex and concave planes, creating rhythmical lines that interplay with one another. The Dafnes F\u00f6rvandling Sculpture, along with other works of public art, was commissioned in conjunction with the renewal of T\u00e4by’s town center.
