Gazing at Västertorpsskolan, can you imagine it as the bustling heart of northern Europe’s largest school in the early 1960s? Västertorpsskolan wasn’t always the F-6 school we see today. Its story began in the grand vision of Stockholm’s 1947 city plan. Architect Sven Markelius designated this very spot, at the corner of Störtloppsvägen and Västertorpsvägen, for “public purposes,” specifically education. Västertorpsskolan found its home just south of the planned Västertorp center and the future Västertorp metro station, which opened in 1964. But even before the metro, trams were already running here in 1952, bringing students to this growing hub of learning. Two years after architect Stig Åkermark put his design to paper in 1949, Västertorpsskolan opened its doors in 1951. The original structure, a classroom wing and a hall building facing Störtloppsvägen, housed eager students. A freestanding caretaker’s house, now gone, stood nearby. Grand plans for an auditorium, another classroom wing, and a sports building with a swimming pool never materialized. Instead, Västertorp got its sports and swimming facilities in the Västertorp Hall, built in 1965 on Personnevägen. Västertorpsskolan continued to evolve. A dining hall was added in 1960, and Åkermark returned to design a separate gymnasium in 1964. Smaller renovations followed, creating space for administrative offices, a dental clinic, and lower and middle school facilities. Yet, the original yellow brick building from 1951 retains much of its initial charm. Sadly, in 2007, parts of Västertorpsskolan were demolished due to low student numbers. But the story doesn’t end there. Just ten years later, in 2017, a new chapter began with the decision to expand. The new building, completed in 2021, now houses a kitchen, dining hall, after-school care, and classrooms, breathing new life into Västertorpsskolan. Look closely, and you’ll discover artistic treasures within. Admire the fresco “The Tale of the Sun and the North Wind” by Vera Nilsson, gracing the stairwell since 1951. On the north wall of the hall building, Otte Sköld’s mosaic “The Saga of the Winds,” also from 1951, captures the eye. Nearby, a quote from Viktor Rydberg’s 1890 ballad “Snöfrid” reminds us, “Better is the struggle.” Västertorpsskolan has seen its share of adversity. A fire in April 2009, started by some youths, gutted the gymnasium. Thankfully, 40 firefighters contained the blaze, preventing further damage and injury. Today, Västertorpsskolan, with its rich history and vibrant present, continues to shape young minds, a testament to the enduring power of education.
