Gazing up at this grand building, can you sense the weight of history it holds? This is the Rainergymnasium. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of education. The Rainergymnasium has been shaping young minds since 1879. It began its journey not here, but in the Wiedner Hauptstraße, housed within the walls of the Piaristenkollegium St. Thekla. The school quickly outgrew its initial home. In 1894, it relocated to its current location in Margareten, on Rainergasse 39. Initially known as the K. K. Staatsgymnasium, it underwent a name change in 1895, becoming the Elisabeth-Gymnasium. The student population boomed. Between 1928 and 1929, the building grew taller, adding two more stories to accommodate the influx of pupils. Tragedy struck in 1945. A bomb hit the Rainergymnasium during World War II, leaving the building ravaged by fire. Reconstruction took years, finally completing in 1952. The Rainergymnasium rose from the ashes, a symbol of Vienna’s resilience. Today, within these walls, you’ll find a vibrant learning environment. There are 23 classrooms, two gyms, a sports field, and specialized rooms for computer science, business education, workshops, photography, music, chemistry, biology, and physics. A library, a treasure trove of knowledge, also resides within. The Rainergymnasium boasts an impressive alumni list. Among its notable graduates is the iconic musician Falco (Johann Hölzel), a testament to the school’s nurturing of diverse talents. As you stand here, imagine the generations of students. They walked these halls, their dreams taking flight within these walls. The Rainergymnasium continues to inspire and educate, its legacy etched in the very fabric of Vienna’s history.
