Stepping into the serene embrace of Entokuji Temple, one can’t help but feel a sense of tranquility. This sub-temple of Kodai-ji Temple, nestled in Southern Higashiyama, Kyoto, offers a captivating journey through art and nature. Entokuji Temple isn’t widely known. Yet it holds a treasure trove of wonders waiting to be discovered. The temple grounds encompass a maze of narrow corridors, leading to exquisitely decorated reception halls and peaceful meditation spaces. Many of these rooms offer breathtaking views of one of Kyoto’s most stunning gardens. A true highlight of Entokuji Temple lies in the vibrant fusuma-e (screen paintings) by the renowned artist Hasegawa Tohaku. These masterpieces evoke a sense of colorful exuberance, reminiscent of Monet’s vibrant works. The heart of Entokuji Temple is its beautiful karesansui (dry stone) garden. This meticulously crafted landscape offers a moment of reflection and contemplation amidst the bustling city. Originally, Entokuji Temple began as Keshoden, the dressing hall of Fushimi Castle. Toshifusa Kinoshita, nephew of Hideyoshi Toyotomi’s wife, Nene, moved the structure to his residence. He then transformed it into the temple we know today. The temple’s name, Entoku-in, comes from Toshifusa’s Buddhist name, further connecting the site to its rich history. Within Entokuji Temple, you’ll find a three-headed Daikokuten statue. This statue is believed to be Hideyoshi’s nenjibutsu, a small Buddha statue kept close for remembrance. This adds another layer of historical significance to Entokuji Temple. Entokuji Temple stands as a testament to the enduring beauty of Japanese art and spirituality. Its tranquil atmosphere and captivating treasures offer a unique and unforgettable experience for those who venture within its walls.
