Overlooking the vast Pacific, Marks Lookout stands as a silent witness to both beauty and tragedy. Here at Marks Lookout, the panoramic views stretch from Bondi in the north to Coogee in the south. The cliffs and ocean breezes offer a peaceful escape. But this serene landscape holds a darker history. Marks Lookout and the coastal walk were once a dangerous place for the LGBTQ community. From the 1970s to the 1990s, a wave of homophobic and transphobic violence swept through Sydney. Marks Park became a tragic epicenter of these hate crimes. Some victims were attacked and thrown from the cliffs. In 2005, a coroner confirmed that at least two men, John Russell and Ross Warren, were murdered at Marks Park because they were gay. The police investigation into these crimes was deemed “disgraceful” and “shameful.” Today, the Bondi Memorial: Rise stands at Marks Lookout. It’s a permanent reminder of the lives lost and a symbol of remembrance. The memorial’s six stone terraces represent the six bands of the Pride flag. They rise towards the sky, symbolizing a pathway forward from the history of violence. Marks Lookout remains a place of reflection. It’s a place to acknowledge a dark past and to celebrate the progress made towards acceptance and diversity.
