Is it true that a Roman Emperor’s mother once lived here in Euren? This is Euren a district in Trier. It is nestled between Luxemburger Straße and Hospitienwald. Euren was incorporated into Trier in 1930. The focal point of Euren is the parish church of St Helena. It was built in the years 1874 to 1876. It was built in the neo-Gothic style.
Let’s talk about what stood here before the church. Once there was a sprawling Roman villa complex. The Eureners believe Saint Helena once lived here. Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great. However historians can’t confirm that she actually lived here. Saint Helena has always played an important role in Euren. The village fountain was named after her.
The area of today’s Euren was like a country estate. Rich Roman citizens from Augusta Treverorum lived here. The large villa complex was built in the 2nd century AD.
A church existed in Euren at least since the 7th century. Bishop Numerian who died on July 5 666 was buried in it. Archbishop Udo von Nellenburg had the church rebuilt in 1075. The church had fallen into disrepair in the meantime. From this point on Euren was an independent parish. Euren was called Urium in Latin. The field name Herresthal was first mentioned in a document in 1247.
The inhabitants of Euren enjoyed Trier citizenship since the Middle Ages. This bond with the city had a downside. Euren often became the target of attacks. It was defenseless due to a lack of fortification. The troops of Count Heinrich von Luxemburg caused severe devastation in 1300. In 1674 a French army retreating from Trier caused devastation too.
Euren gained special importance in the Middle Ages. It became a court and execution place for corporal and capital punishment. The Thingstätte including the gallows was located outside the village. It was near the Moselle.
The parish church of St Helena was badly damaged by artillery fire. This happened in December 1944. It was rebuilt by 1948. The reconstruction followed the original plans.
Euren was incorporated into Trier in 1930. Before that it had been under the administrative control of the Trier suburbs. Today Euren covers 1271.5 hectares. That makes it the second largest of Trier’s 19 districts. In 2021 Euren had 4308 residents. That makes it the tenth largest district.
