Perched atop the Ueno Fire Department, the old watchtower whispers tales of bygone eras. The 上野消防署(旧下谷消防署)望楼上部, or Ueno Fire Department Watchtower Upper Section, might seem like a curious relic now. But it once played a vital role in protecting the city from the ever-present threat of fire. Imagine Tokyo in the Edo period. Fires were a constant menace in a city built primarily of wood. Before modern communication, vigilant eyes were the first line of defense. The 上野消防署(旧下谷消防署)望楼上部 served as those eyes, scanning the horizon for the first telltale wisps of smoke. This watchtower wasn’t just a perch for weary eyes. It was a symbol of hope and protection. It stood tall, a beacon of safety in a city vulnerable to the whims of nature and accident. The Ueno Fire Department (formerly the Shimotani Fire Department) used the watchtower until 1970. Its design reflects the architectural styles of the Taisho era (1912-1926). This triangular, four-story structure once reached a height of roughly 23.6 meters. The part displayed now represents the upper 7 meters of the original tower. Originally, the structure extended 20 meters, topped by this 7-meter section. Its design, using western techniques like洋風チック, stands out as a unique blend of East and West. The tower was built in 1925 at a location in Taitō Ward. It was used until 1970. The tower was dismantled in 1977. The surviving section offers a glimpse into a time when the city depended on such structures. Today, the cityscape looks vastly different from what those watchmen would have seen. Yet, this remnant of the past allows us to connect with their dedication. They tirelessly guarded their city, one watchful glance at a time. The 上野消防署(旧下谷消防署)望楼上部 is more than just an old tower. It is a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring spirit of Tokyo.
