Hidden within Vienna’s 8th district, the Luigard-Hof stands as a testament to a time when art and industry intertwined. The Luigard-Hof isn’t just a residential building. It’s a story etched in stone and tile, a story I’m excited to share with you. The Luigard-Hof emerged in 1909, thanks to the vision of Johann Miedel. He designed it for Richard Honetz, a printer and imperial councillor who owned the Kunstdruckerei Luigard. The building itself is a fascinating blend of architectural styles. The ground floor, with its tiled pilasters and rich Empire decor, evokes the grandeur of classicism. Venture inside, and you’ll be greeted by a remarkable tiled foyer. Above the entrance, two sandstone figures stand guard. They represent Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press, and Alois Senefelder, the inventor of lithography. Both figures were sculpted by H. Scherz, adding another layer of artistic significance to the Luigard-Hof. The Luigard-Hof’s name itself is a link to its past. It’s named after Honetz’s printing company, the Kunstdruckerei Luigard, further solidifying the building’s connection to Vienna’s rich printing history. So, as you stand before the Luigard-Hof, take a moment to appreciate the artistry. It is a hidden gem within Vienna’s urban landscape.
