Let’s step back to 1902. Banker Carl Cervin built this grand building. His intention was to provide education for young women. He aimed to empower them to be independent. This “fristad” offered them refuge and skills. Sadly, this initial endeavor closed its doors in 1920. Spånga municipality then transformed it into an elderly home.

Fast forward to 1984. Ellen Keyskolan found its home here. The school had outgrown its original location in Ör. The move marked a new chapter for this historic building. Before Ellen Keyskolan occupied this space, Stockholm city built a new eldercare facility next to the old Fristad in the early 1980s.

Now, about the school’s namesake, Ellen Key. Key was a renowned Swedish writer and pedagogue. Her book “Barnets århundrade” meaning “The Century of the Child” gained global recognition.
