Have you ever wondered what a neighborhood can become a part of? In the heart of Warsaw, nestled between Szaserów and Wspólna Droga, lies the Osiedle Młodych. This neighborhood’s beginnings date back to 1956, a year ripe with political upheaval. 14 thriving local businesses, eager to find solutions for their own housing challenges, came together in an act of community. This moment of collective hope took shape on the 8th of December 1956, a meeting to discuss a bold vision. Just a few months later, in January 1957, the Robotnicza Spółdzielnia Mieszkaniowa “Osiedle Młodych” was born.

United by a burning desire to forge their own destiny, the founding members embarked on a journey. The groundbreaking ceremony for the first building, erected on the grounds of the old Fort XI, took place on June 16th, 1957. The project, overseen by architects Stefan Ciechanowicz and Tadeusz Kobylański, was a testament to dreams of shared ownership. These newly constructed homes initially gained a playful reputation as “housing for lovers” or “homeless lovers.” The reason behind these charming titles was the fact that most of the apartments were assigned to young couples without their own housing.

Construction progressed swiftly, and on January 23rd, 1959, the first buildings were ready. The final count for the year revealed nine completed buildings, housing 231 fortunate families. This marked the beginning of the first of nine RSM settlements, “Osiedle Młodych,” also known as the “Szaserów settlement.”

Construction continued, and in 1970 the area saw the establishment of the RSM “Praga” housing cooperative, which gained control of buildings and investment lands in the Praga Północ district. It was further followed by the establishment of the “Gocław-Lotnisko” housing cooperative in 1982, which incorporated buildings and grounds in the former aeroklub at Gocław.

With the swift increase in housing units and the policies of the Stołeczny Związek Spółdzielni Budownictwa Mieszkaniowego, the RSM “Osiedle Młodych” was officially separated as another independent housing cooperative in 1970.

Over half a century has passed since that pivotal year of 1956. Today, Osiedle Młodych stands as a vibrant neighborhood, a testament to a community’s resilience and the ever-evolving urban landscape.
