“Buildings represent the work of a closed era as examples of wooden holiday architecture.” That’s how the provincial conservator described Willa Nowość and Willa Nowość II. We are standing before Willa Nowość in Otwock. It is not just one villa but a complex of two wooden villas. They stand at Kościuszki Street 5 and 7.

These villas whisper tales of a bygone era. They represent examples of wooden architecture from the holidays. The Mazovian Conservator of Monuments Jakub Lewicki made the decision to enter Willa Nowość and Willa Nowość II into the register of monuments. He emphasized their preserved artistic and historical value.

Notice the verandas. Admire the decorative motifs. See the profiled pillars. Appreciate the balustrade rails. Look at the sculptured strips under the eaves. Note the cornices. Lewicki also highlights the well-preserved details. These details include the facade decor windows staircases and tiled stoves. They are in very good condition.

The history of Willa Nowość is closely connected to the Jewish community. This community thrived in Otwock. They were mainly involved in trade and crafts. Many also ran guesthouses and health resorts.

Before 1916, they belonged to the Jewish community in Karczew. Later, an independent Jewish community was established in Otwock. Pinkas Kacenelenbogen was its president. In 1924, the villas Nowość and Nowość II were built on his property. They were exclusive guesthouses. Together, they formed the Willa Nowość complex.

Both villas are wooden. In the 1930s a ground-floor residential annex was added. It was added to the eastern wing of the house at 7 Kościuszki Street. Besides the owner, Dr. Ludwik Mierosławski lived here. He was a well-known doctor from Otwock. He was also the great-grandson of a January Uprising dictator. He was an independence activist.

At 5 Kościuszki Street, Bronisław Marchlewicz lived. He was the police chief. He was awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” medal. He rescued Jewish children during the war.

After World War II, the State Treasury took over the buildings. Willa Nowość stands as a testament to Otwock’s rich history. It reflects its vibrant Jewish community. It also embodies its architectural heritage. As you gaze upon Willa Nowość, imagine the lives that unfolded within its walls. Picture the families who sought refuge here. Envision the bustling atmosphere of a popular resort. The villas remain silent witnesses to a vibrant past.
