Once upon a time, nestled in the Vienna Woods, a sanctuary emerged from the shadows of a dark past. This is the story of Tierpark Wolfsgraben. Tierpark Wolfsgraben, a place where resilience whispers from the rustling leaves and hope echoes in the gentle braying of a donkey. Tierpark Wolfsgraben’s story began with a heartbreaking discovery. Gabriele Wodak, a local resident, stumbled upon a scene of neglect and despair at the former Tierpark Wolfsgraben. Animals were confined to cramped, squalid cages, their spirits broken, their bodies weak. Ponies, donkeys, raccoons, wolves, foxes, deer, wild horses, cattle, cats, and countless small animals languished in dire conditions. With the support of Professor Dr. Helmut Pechlaner and the Schönbrunn Zoo, emergency aid was swiftly provided. Most of the animals were nursed back to health and relocated to other animal parks. Gabriele Wodak took the remaining animals under her wing, providing them with temporary shelter in private stables and at the Schönbrunn Zoo during the harsh winter. Seeing no other viable solution, Gabriele Wodak made a courageous decision. In 1999, she acquired the dilapidated zoo. She used her own resources to rebuild it as a haven for animals in need. Thus, the Tierpark Wolfsgraben was reborn. Some residents from the original zoo still call it home, a testament to Gabriele’s unwavering commitment. Today, Tierpark Wolfsgraben stands as a testament to compassion and second chances. It features sprawling pastures, bright, clean stables, and enclosures designed to meet each animal’s specific needs. Every animal receives individualized care, enrichment activities, and veterinary attention. They live in established herds or groups, enjoying as much freedom as possible. The park is home to Bactrian camels, cotton-top tamarins, Noriker horses, miniature horses, Poitou donkeys, white baroque donkeys, cows, mini pigs, goats, cats, rabbits, chickens, ducks, and peacocks. Tierpark Wolfsgraben is more than just a zoo. It is a place of healing, where animals find solace and humans connect with nature. The park emphasizes “behavior enrichment.” It keeps the animals stimulated and engaged to prevent boredom. This commitment ensures that these once-neglected creatures live full, enriching lives.
