Did Joseph Kilgour ever imagine his beloved Sunnybrook Farm would become one of Toronto’s most cherished parks? Sunnybrook Park, nestled in Toronto, stretches across 147.1 acres. It offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. Sunnybrook Park’s story began in the 1890s when Joseph Kilgour, President of the Canada Paper Company, purchased the land. Originally a 175-acre farm complete with horse stables, it was known as Sunnybrook Farm. In 1928, the Kilgours, having no children, generously gifted the farm to the City of Toronto to be enjoyed as a public park. Sunnybrook Park officially opened in that year. Later, in 1969, its management was transferred to Metro Parks. Today, Sunnybrook Park boasts a network of bike trails, inviting dog parks, and the renowned Sunnybrook Stables. These stables, open to the public since 1978, once housed approximately thirty horses and featured indoor and outdoor arenas and paddocks. Sadly, tragedy struck in May 2018 when a fire engulfed Sunnybrook Stables, claiming the lives of sixteen horses. The cause remains undetermined, though fireworks were suspected. Beyond its recreational offerings, Sunnybrook Park has also hosted international sporting events. In 2004, the park’s grounds welcomed a first-class cricket match between Canada and Bermuda as part of the ICC Intercontinental Cup. The park also hosted matches during the 2001 ICC Trophy. Sunnybrook Park continues to be a vibrant hub for recreation and community, a testament to the Kilgours’ vision. Their generous gift allows Torontonians to connect with nature and enjoy a piece of the city’s rich history.
