Thirty-three students. Four teachers. A bold vision. That’s how Indian Creek School began in 1973. Right here in Crownsville Maryland this small school blossomed. Indian Creek School wasn’t just another school. It was a dream. Founders Anne Coleman Chambers and Rebecca Randolph had a revolutionary idea. They wanted smaller class sizes. They wanted to challenge each student uniquely.
Indian Creek School’s unique approach was rooted in developmental psychology. Each child’s learning style was considered. Every student was given the chance to shine. This wasn’t just theory. It was a hands-on approach. The school developed personalized learning plans. It prioritized collaboration between students teachers and parents.
The school quickly grew. In 1977 a middle school was added. Enrollment skyrocketed to 184 students. The original Evergreen Road campus expanded. New buildings classrooms and even a library wing appeared. In 1998 the Evergreen campus doubled in size. Alumni Hall locker rooms and fourteen more classrooms were added.
Growth continued. Indian Creek added an upper school in 2004. The upper school originally started in the Crownsville Hospital Center. Then a brand-new $17 million facility was built. This second campus sat on a former 114-acre tobacco farm. A portion of the land was conserved. The new campus was connected to Evergreen Road by a road named after founder Anne Coleman Chambers.
Indian Creek’s expansion wasn’t just about space. It was about vision. The school developed a four-year STEM program. It offered a Voros Senior Thesis program in humanities. Foreign language learning was prioritized. Spanish Latin Japanese and Arabic were all available.
The school continued to adapt. In 2017 seventh and eighth graders moved to the upper school campus. The Evergreen campus was sold. But Indian Creek’s commitment to its students endured. Today Indian Creek School stands as a testament to its founders’ vision. It’s a place where every student is challenged and nurtured.
