Has anyone ever noticed how the Kulturkirche St. Jakobi leans? Look closely at those western pillars. They stand at a noticeable slant, a testament to the unstable ground beneath. The Kulturkirche St. Jakobi has been a landmark in Stralsund since 1303. This makes it the youngest of the three main parish churches. Today, it serves as a vibrant cultural center. Originally, the Kulturkirche St. Jakobi was surrounded by houses. Sadly, many of these were destroyed during the bombing of Stralsund in October 1944. Now, a peaceful park sits where the old churchyard once lay. The church itself is a striking example of brick Gothic architecture. It’s a basilica with a straight choir and a prominent western tower. Imagine the medieval builders laying each brick, only to find their work slowly tilting. In the 1380s and 1390s, chapels were added to the nave. However, the unstable ground caused the western pillars to lean, a quirk that adds character to the building. The tower is an interesting story in itself. After the collapse of St. Mary’s Church tower in 1382, likely due to the same unstable ground, the builders of St. Jakobi took note. They incorporated the old tower’s western pillars into the new, larger structure. The Kulturkirche St. Jakobi has seen its share of disasters. Thirty cannonballs struck it during Wallenstein’s siege of Stralsund. Lightning struck the tower twice in the 17th century, destroying the original spire. A baroque dome replaced it. The church even served as a stable and prison during the Napoleonic Wars. The 20th century brought more hardship. The bombing raids of World War II severely damaged the Kulturkirche St. Jakobi. Fortunately, some treasures, like the pulpit by Hans Lucht and Tischbein’s altarpiece, were saved. Following the war, dedicated efforts and funding from various sources have gradually restored the church. Today, the Kulturkirche St. Jakobi stands as a symbol of Stralsund’s resilience. It serves as a venue for theater performances, exhibitions, and concerts. A new organ, inspired by 18th-century craftsmanship, now fills the church with music. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this historic building.
