“A bustling hub of diplomacy” whispers the wind around the British Embassy in Vientiane. This isn’t just any building. It’s a testament to renewed ties. After a 27-year absence the UK returned to Laos in 2012. Ambassador Philip Malone led the charge. His mission? To boost trade between our nations. Three months later Laos joined the World Trade Organization. This opened doors to lucrative partnerships in various sectors. Think education infrastructure design garment manufacturing and mining.

The embassy officially reopened its doors on April 2nd 2013. The very next day Ambassador Malone started talks with British businesses in Laos. His aim was to create the British Business Group. It would formalize existing informal networks among British companies operating in Laos. Land Rover JCB PriceWaterhouseCooper KPMG Rio Tinto and Standard Chartered Bank were already established here. Hundreds of British nationals were working in small and medium-sized enterprises. Malone hoped the group would thrive. It would connect UK businesses and citizens in Laos. It would foster collaboration.

By 2015 Ambassador Hugh Evans took the reins. The embassy focused on establishing an official British Business Group. With the UK then part of the European Union this presented new possibilities. The Lao government allowed it to operate as a non-profit organization. It was eventually to become the British Chamber of Commerce in Laos. Lord David Putnam the UK Trade Envoy inaugurated the British Business Group Laos in 2015.

After formal registration in 2018 the British Business Group Laos continued to flourish. It worked closely with the Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry. They collaborated on various initiatives. They strived to boost trade and investment between Laos and the UK. The group hosts monthly networking events in Vientiane and Luang Prabang. They participate in trade fairs and business-related events. They offer advice to British businesses setting up in Laos. They support Lao businesses trading with the UK.

The British Embassy itself stands as a silent observer. It’s witnessed the evolution of trade relations. It serves as a bridge between two countries. It represents a commitment to cooperation and prosperity. More than just a building it’s a symbol of enduring partnerships. A symbol of cooperation across continents.
