Revolutionizing education. That’s what Lingnan Primary School set out to do. Lingnan Primary School is more than just a school. It is a place steeped in history and dedicated to nurturing young minds.
Lingnan Primary School’s story starts with a group of alumni. These alumni hailed from Lingnan University in Guangzhou. They established the Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) in the 1950s. The “Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong)”, or LUAA in brief, was established in 1950s by a group of alumni. They lived in Hong Kong and came from Lingnan University in Guangzhou.
In 1953 tragedy struck. The Shek Kip Mei Fire left thousands homeless. The government responded quickly building resettlement estates in 1954. Many children could only study in rooftop primary schools. These schools often lacked proper facilities.
Inspired by Lingnan University’s motto “Education for Service”, LUAA took action. In 1960 they formed an organizing committee. It was for “Lingnan Alumni Association Primary School” or LUAPS. After securing government land and raising funds the school opened in 1964. Its address was 33 Pak Tin Street in Shek Kip Mei. The Lingnan Primary School provided formal primary education to students in the district.
To further enhance its liberal arts education, LUAA proposed a transformation. In 2005 they wanted to become a Direct Subsidy Scheme school or DSS. Senior Lingnanians and fellow alumni supported the proposal. The Education Bureau approved the change in 2006. The school was renamed “Lingnan University Alumni Association (Hong Kong) Primary School” or LUAAPS.
Today Lingnan Primary School is composed of two campuses. There is the Lingnan Campus and the Kow Kong Campus. The Kow Kong Campus was originally the Kow Kong Commercial Association School. The Kow Kong Commercial Association recognized Lingnan Primary School’s mission. They allowed LUAAPS to use their campus after KK School closed.
Lingnan Primary School now boasts impressive facilities. There are 20 classrooms and two playgrounds. There is also a hall and an indoor activity room. A library is available plus a visual arts cum computer room. The school also features a music room and a dancing room. Home economics and a multi-purpose room exist. An English learning room, kitchen and tuck shop complete the facilities.
