Hidden within Prague’s vibrant tapestry lies the Přírodní památka Pod Školou. It whispers tales of ancient seas and the creatures that once swam within them. This unassuming nature reserve, nestled in the Hlubočepy district, north of the Buštěhradská railway, isn’t just a quiet retreat. It’s a window into deep time. Established in 1988, Přírodní památka Pod Školou covers 2.46 hectares. The area was once a bustling quarry, active into the 19th or possibly even the first half of the 20th century. The quarrying activity, while disruptive, inadvertently revealed a treasure trove of fossils. The exposed rock face at Přírodní památka Pod Školou provides a glimpse into the lower and upper parts of the Třebotov limestone formation. These limestone layers, interspersed with shale, hold the fossilized remains of trilobites, brachiopods, cephalopods, and other ancient marine life. These fossils, first described in the mid-19th century, have contributed significantly to our understanding of the Devonian period. The area’s unique geological profile, shaped by quarrying, makes it a classic location for fossil discoveries, echoing the groundbreaking work of Joachim Barrande. Today, the quarry is silent, and nature has begun to reclaim the space. The steep slopes and rocky terrain now support a unique mix of vegetation, including species typical of dry, rocky slopes like the Cornelian cherry, Field Maple, and Spurge Laurel. Look closely, and you’ll see the more delicate blooms of Fragrant Cranesbill, Cardo-leaf Thistle, and Wall Fescue. With a little luck, you might even spot the rare White Mullein. The base of the former quarry, once an orchard, now features scree slopes and remnants of building materials, a testament to the site’s industrial past. The area is also known for rockfalls, a natural phenomenon caused by the layered structure of limestone and shale. The shale layers easily erode, creating slippery surfaces and leading to the characteristic small-scale landslides seen here. This ongoing geological process continually reshapes the landscape of Přírodní památka Pod Školou, reminding us of the powerful forces that shape our world.
