What was once a thundering racetrack is now the vibrant Thorncliffe Park. Thorncliffe Park’s story begins much earlier than its current high-rises suggest. Thorncliffe Park takes its name from Thorn Cliff House. This was the 19th-century home of the Taylor family. Their estate spanned a vast 82 acres at the Forks of the Don Valley. The family’s influence expanded throughout the Don Valley. They held thousands of acres, shaping the landscape for generations to come. Thorncliffe Park later became a renowned horse racing and breeding ground. From 1917 to 1952, the Thorncliffe Park Raceway hosted thrilling races. The echoes of thundering hooves and cheering crowds have faded. But street names like Grandstand Place and Milepost Place still whisper of the past. The neighborhood transformed in the 1950s. Thorncliffe Park became one of Toronto’s first high-rise communities. This was in response to the post-war housing boom. Today, Thorncliffe Park is a diverse “arrival city”. Thorncliffe Park has welcomed waves of immigrants. It boasts a population of over 21,000 with a remarkable 9.79% increase since 2011. The area is a melting pot of cultures. This diversity is reflected in the top non-English mother tongues spoken here. These include Urdu, Pashto, Tagalog, Persian, and Gujarati. This blend of cultures gives Thorncliffe Park its unique character. This vibrant community continues to evolve. Thorncliffe Park remains a hub of activity.
