Lost in the 13 hectares of Vienna’s Draschepark. Picture this: a sprawling green space in Liesing’s 23rd district. This isn’t just any park. It’s a landscape echoing with history. The Draschepark stands on land once occupied by two impressive castles. The Wasserschloss Inzersdorf a 17th-century masterpiece and its slightly younger neighbor a palace built in 1765.

Sadly these magnificent structures met their end. World War II bombs inflicted serious damage. By 1965 both were completely demolished during the construction of the Vienna Southeast Tangent highway. That’s a smart-aleck fact for you. They simply disappeared to make way for progress.

But the story of the Draschepark isn’t solely one of loss. Before the highway there was a meticulously planned baroque garden. Orchards and vegetable gardens flourished. Fields of wildflowers carpeted the land. The Franziscean Cadastre of 1818 even depicts the area as a woodland park crisscrossed by paths. Remnants of this past remain.

Today’s Draschepark still retains traces of its former glory. The avenues of chestnut and sycamore trees persist. Some areas have naturally reverted to woodland. The Mühlbach stream and the Liesing River now flow in man-made channels. Modern additions such as a barbecue area playgrounds and a BMX track cater to the needs of visitors. Even an open-air cinema entertains during summer evenings.

Despite the changes the Draschepark remains a haven of tranquility. It’s a place where you can walk along the Rundumadum trail. Nearby you’ll find the Drascheparksteg Nord bridge spanning the Altmannsdorfer Graben the Hermannssteg bridge and the Triester Liesingbrücke. This park offers a peaceful escape from the urban bustle. It demonstrates the enduring power of nature its resilience and adaptability. It’s a reminder that even amidst loss and transformation beauty and recreation can flourish.
