Marvelous isn’t it? This exquisite statue of Saint John Nepomucen. Right here on Senatorska Street.

This isn’t just any statue. It’s a piece of 18th-century Warsaw. A testament to the artistry of Giovanni Liverotti. He crafted this beauty in 1733. Commissioned by the powerful Jozef Wandalin Mniszech and his wife Konstancja. Imagine the opulence of their palace nearby. This statue stands as the sole survivor of their once grand garden.

The statue itself is a masterpiece of the Rococo style. Notice the four bas-reliefs on the column. They depict Saint John’s virtues: fortitude temperance justice and prudence. Clever isn’t it? The initials JMK and their mirror image are subtly placed. Connected by a W. These are the initials of the Mniszechs and their family.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 2004 a major restoration took place. During this work a lead commemorative plaque was unearthed. The Latin inscription translates to a lengthy dedication. It tells of Jozef Wandalin Mniszech’s family and their devotion. A copy resides in the Warsaw History Museum. Another in the Belgian Embassy. Why the Belgian Embassy? The Mniszech Palace now houses the embassy.

The statue’s hands were also restored. They originally held a crucifix. This detail wasn’t obvious until the restoration. The restoration carefully recreated the saint’s hands. The original design was lost after World War II. They were repaired and gilded to their former glory.

So much history. So much artistry packed into this single statue. Remember it. Remember Saint John Nepomucen. A silent sentinel on Senatorska Street. A testament to faith power and exquisite craftsmanship.
