Deep in the Kyll Valley, nestled amidst the Meulenwald forest, rises Ramsteiner Schweiz. Ramsteiner Schweiz isn’t actually Swiss. “Ramsteiner Schweiz” is a nickname given by locals. They recognized its unique beauty. The real name of this historic site is Ramstein Castle. This castle has witnessed centuries of history. It stands as a testament to Trier’s rich past. Ramstein Castle was built in the early 14th century. Archbishop Diether of Nassau commissioned it. He envisioned it as a successor to an older fortified manor farm. The castle became a fief castle of the Electorate of Trier. This meant it was subleased to various subjects and cathedral deans. Its strategic location on the Roman road from Trier to Andernach gave it importance. This road was vital for trade and communication. Ramstein Castle wasn’t immune to conflict. During the War of the Palatine Succession, French troops occupied the castle. In 1689, they largely blew it up. The damage was so extensive that it was never fully repaired. Today, only ruins remain. You can still see tall sections of curtain walls. Elements of corner towers are also visible. The stone staircases of its medieval tower house still stand. They whisper tales of bygone eras. Three modern buildings now occupy the southern part of the promontory. One of these buildings is a hotel-restaurant. Its outdoor terrace offers breathtaking views. You can gaze upon the wooded Kyll valley. Imagine the knights who once walked these grounds. Think of the feasts and battles that unfolded within these walls. Ramstein Castle, or Ramsteiner Schweiz, as the locals affectionately call it, is more than just a ruin. It’s a portal to the past. It offers a glimpse into a world of archbishops, knights, and sieges. It is a place where history comes alive.
