Hatchers Memorial Baptist Church

In 1866, amidst the echoes of the Civil War, a spark of faith ignited in Brentsville. This spark became Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church. The church, initially known as Brentsville Baptist Church, first held services in the Brentsville courthouse and other locations. Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church’s journey reflects the resilience of its congregation. They worshipped in these temporary spaces until the Union Church in Brentsville was constructed around 1874. In 1913, the congregation acquired the Episcopalian St. James’ Church. This historic building, built between 1846 and 1848, became their new home. It was renamed Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church to honor Dr. William E. Hatcher. Dr. Hatcher was instrumental in raising the funds to purchase the church. The church dedicated the building in December 1913. The congregation at Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church has been guided by over 30 pastors throughout its history. The church stands as a testament to enduring faith. It is the second oldest church still standing in Prince William County. St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Haymarket is the oldest. Hatcher’s Church holds a place on the Prince William County Register of Historic Places. Hatcher’s Memorial Baptist Church has preserved much of its heritage. It remains a vibrant and active part of the community. It strives to reflect the light of Christ and continues to welcome new members to join its journey of faith.
