Could you imagine surfing in church? That’s kind of how the Igreja Bola de Neve got its start. The Igreja Bola de Neve stands as a testament to faith and cultural fusion. It began with a surfer and a dream.

In 1999 Rinaldo Luiz de Seixas Pereira founded the Igreja Bola de Neve in Sāo Paulo. Rinaldo also known as Apóstolo Rina was a pastor and a surfer. He wanted to connect with young people in a new way.

Unlike traditional churches, the Igreja Bola de Neve embraced informality. It spoke to a younger audience. The church incorporated elements of extreme sports into its identity. Surfing, skateboarding, running and cycling became symbols. Many Igreja Bola de Neve locations feature decor inspired by these sports.

Rina’s personal journey shaped the church’s direction. After a severe case of hepatitis he had a profound spiritual experience. He dedicated his life to Christ. Rina initially worked as an evangelism leader at Igreja Renascer em Cristo. He later felt called to start his own church.

The name Igreja Bola de Neve or Snowball Church came from a dream. It symbolizes a small snowball growing into an avalanche. This reflects the church’s growth and impact.

The first meetings took place in a surf shop. Without a pulpit or table, Rina used a surfboard to hold the Bible. This surfboard became a trademark. It embodies the Igreja Bola de Neve’s unique approach.

Today the Igreja Bola de Neve has hundreds of locations. It spans Brazil and countries like Portugal, Colombia and Canada. The church’s mission focuses on planting churches. It aims to transform people into the image of Christ. Rina believed in meeting young people where they were. He wanted to embrace them instead of judging their lifestyles.

The Igreja Bola de Neve grew quickly. It attracted celebrities such as Gabriel Medina. The church uses social media to connect with followers. Its slogan is “In Jesus we trust.”

The Igreja Bola de Neve has moved its headquarters several times. It has occupied locations in Perdizes and Lapa. One location is in a former music venue. This shows the church’s ability to adapt and grow.

Sadly Rina’s life was marked by controversy. He was suspended from his duties due to domestic violence allegations. In November 2024 Rina died in a motorcycle accident. Despite these challenges the Igreja Bola de Neve continues to thrive.

The Igreja Bola de Neve’s legacy is its innovative approach to faith. It blends sports culture with evangelical principles. It created a welcoming space for young people. The church’s story is one of faith, innovation and resilience. It shows how a simple dream can create a global movement.
