Between two shimmering lakes. That’s Interlagos. Picture this sprawling motorsport circuit nestled between the Guarapiranga and Billings reservoirs. Interlagos isn’t just a racetrack. It’s a piece of São Paulo’s vibrant history.

Opened on May 12 1940 Interlagos was initially called Autódromo de Interlagos. Its design drew inspiration from iconic tracks around the globe like Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Brooklands. The name Interlagos meaning “between lakes” perfectly captures its location.

The early days of Interlagos were humble. The grandstands were missing. The pit facilities were rudimentary. Yet crowds flocked to witness the races. The first Grand Prix of São Paulo was held here in 1940.

Formula 1 arrived in 1972. It was a non-championship race. Carlos Reutemann won it. The first World Championship Brazilian Grand Prix was held at Interlagos in 1973. Emerson Fittipaldi a local hero won the race. He triumphed again the following year. José Carlos Pace won his only Interlagos race in 1975.

Safety concerns emerged. The original 7.960 km track layout was deemed dangerous. The bumpy surface posed challenges. Inadequate barriers increased risks. Formula 1 moved to Jacarepaguá in Rio de Janeiro. Interlagos hosted national championships.

Formula 1 returned in 1990. A $15 million renovation transformed Interlagos. The track was shortened to 4.325 km. The improved safety standards ensured a smoother racing experience.

Interlagos has witnessed thrilling races. Dramatic finishes became its trademark especially when it became a season-ending race in 2004. Championships were won and lost here. The 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix is legendary. Felipe Massa almost won the World Championship. Lewis Hamilton snatched victory on the last lap.

Beyond Formula 1 Interlagos hosts numerous events. The Lollapalooza music festival has drawn huge crowds. National championships in various motorsports and cycling races keep Interlagos buzzing.

Today Interlagos stands as a testament to São Paulo’s passion for speed and its rich racing legacy. A kart circuit named after Ayrton Senna is part of the complex. The improvements continue. Interlagos will be the location of future races and events. Its history echoes in every roar of the engine. Every turn tells a story. Interlagos. A place of speed legends and unforgettable moments.
