Picture this: a weathered white clapboard church. It stands serenely amidst the trees. This is Wakefield Chapel Church. It’s a Gothic marvel. Its arched windows gaze out upon the world. Built between 1887 and 1899 it whispers tales of faith and resilience.

Wakefield Chapel Church in Annandale Virginia holds a special place in history. It was the vision of Oliver Besley. A local sawmill owner he donated the land. The original deed had a unique condition. Methodist services were only allowed two Sundays a month. Other denominations could use it the rest of the time.

Rev Elhanan Wakefield was the chapel’s first preacher. A remarkable man he was a trained carpenter. He contributed much of the labor to build this church. Besley provided the materials. Wakefield’s life was extraordinary. He sought fortune in the California Gold Rush. He fought for the Union in the Civil War. He was gravely wounded at the Battle of Tom’s Brook. They thought him dead. He was about to be buried in a mass grave. Someone noticed him twitch. They pulled him out. He recovered miraculously. Later he discovered he still had two bullets lodged in his shoulder. This caused him pain throughout his life.

Wakefield Chapel Church wasn’t always so pristine. By 1963 it was abandoned. It was deemed unsafe. It needed extensive repairs. A lightning strike in July 1970 destroyed the steeple. The future looked bleak. Then a community effort saved this local treasure. The new steeple was in place by February 1971. Full restoration took years. In 1975 the Fairfax County Park Authority took ownership. They preserved this piece of history.

Today Wakefield Chapel Church stands as a testament to faith community and perseverance. It’s a reminder of the remarkable lives who built it. It’s a quiet sanctuary amidst the bustling modern world.
