The journey to Kung Um Shan is an adventure itself. You start near the Hung Shui Hang Reservoir. This reservoir is like Lam Tei Reservoir an irrigation reservoir. The trail then leads you past the Majestic Eagle Rock. This remarkable rock formation resembles a majestic eagle’s head. It’s easily spotted from afar. Remember safety first when admiring the rock. Don’t venture too close to the edges.
The trail continues upwards eventually becoming rugged and challenging. The terrain is a bit slippery because of small stones. Another electric tower signals your nearness to the summit of Kung Um Shan. Once you reach the top prepare for a full 360-degree view. The open scenery reveals the beauty of the surrounding mountains and the northern New Territories.
Descending Kung Um Shan is equally interesting. You’ll pass an abandoned house located behind Kung Um Temple. This adds a touch of mystery to your hike. The trail then descends passing a few car garages before reaching Kung Um Road. From there it’s a short trip to a minibus stop. You can take it to Long Ping MTR station completing your journey.
The entire hike from start to finish takes about 4.5 hours. It’s an intermediate level hike. The 8km trail is well worth the effort. Remember to bring enough water and wear appropriate gear.
