Did you ever hear of a painting framed by fifteen golden reliefs? Here at the Madonna del Rosario, you’ll find just that. The Madonna del Rosario isn’t just any church. It houses a captivating piece of art. The painting itself, “Madonna del Rosario with Saints Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena,” is a masterpiece by Guercino. It dates back to 1635. You can find this artwork in the Rosary Chapel. This chapel is dedicated to the Order of Malta. It was constructed later, in the latter half of the 18th century, by Luigi Michele Barberis. What makes this artwork even more unique is its frame. Fifteen gilded reliefs surround Guercino’s painting. These reliefs depict the Mysteries of the Rosary. They were sculpted by Stefano Maria Clemente, adding another layer of artistry to this sacred space within the Madonna del Rosario. The church also has a rich history of mass services, having been recorded to hold masses as recently as August 14th.
