“Where were we?” That thought might cross your mind standing here before the “Erinnere Dich” plaque, a simple granite marker. This plaque isn’t about a grand palace or a famous statue. It’s about a wound on the city’s soul. The plaque marks a place where a synagogue once stood, a vibrant center for the Jewish community of Tulln-Klosterneuburg. Dedicated on August 20th, 1914, it witnessed a time of both peace and terrible violence. In November 1938, during the Kristallnacht pogrom, the synagogue suffered severe damage, a chilling foreshadowing of the horrors to come. The “Erinnere Dich” plaque, meaning “Remember,” stands as a stark reminder of the fragility of peace and the enduring impact of hate. It calls on us to remember the past, not just its triumphs but also its darkest chapters. Only by remembering can we hope to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
