In 1994, the Baugewerbliche Berufsschule Zürich (BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2) celebrated its 30th anniversary. Now, imagine stepping back in time to that celebration, the air buzzing with excitement. The BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2, a cornerstone of vocational education in Zurich, stood proudly. The BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2 isn’t just a school. It’s a launchpad for careers, a hub for innovation in construction and design. The “Planning and Shell Construction” department, located within the BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2, trains aspiring draftsmen and women across various disciplines. These include geomatics, masonry, carpentry, and architectural model making. The school also provides higher vocational education and training programs. The BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2 accommodates roughly 500 students daily. It houses 31 classrooms, along with prep rooms, collections, model rooms, a multipurpose room, student workspaces, and staff rooms. Two sports halls and two smaller sports rooms are also part of the complex. Originally, this department was located further away from the main BBZ building. The replacement building at Reishauerstrasse 2 brought it closer, optimizing operations, simplifying management, and creating a more efficient schedule. This move also aligned with the “Vocational Training Mile” regional strategy. The architecture of the BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2 is modern and striking. The slender building defines the transition between large-scale public structures and the surrounding residential and work district. The design is open and engaging, radiating a welcoming presence. Inside, the building is efficiently organized with three classroom floors divided into sections by two staircases. The pillar and slab construction allows for flexibility and future adaptations. Sustainability is a key feature of the BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2. The building meets Minergie-P-ECO standards and the SNBS Gold level. It connects to Zurich’s district heating network, uses heat recovery in ventilation systems, and features a rooftop photovoltaic system for optimized energy efficiency. The construction of this new building was a multi-year project. The competition phase began in November 2018, with construction starting in January 2022. The BBZ – Schulhaus Reishauerstrasse 2 officially opened its doors in August 2024.
