Tucked away in the bustling heart of downtown Toronto, Masjid Toronto stands as a testament to faith and resilience. Masjid Toronto isn’t just a building. It’s a vibrant hub, a sanctuary for a diverse community. Located at 168 Dundas Street West, at the corner of Dundas and Chestnut, Masjid Toronto is easily accessible. You can hop on the 505 Dundas streetcar or take a short walk from St. Patrick or Dundas subway stations. Masjid Toronto opened its doors to the public in January 2002. But the building itself holds a much older story. Before it became a place of worship, it served as a branch of the Royal Bank of Canada. The RBC operated at this very spot since the 1940s. By the late 1990s, the growing Muslim community in downtown Toronto faced a challenge. Finding a consistent space for Friday prayers became increasingly difficult. For years, they rented spaces in various office buildings. They even held prayers at the National Ballet of Canada’s premises! Then, 9/11 happened. The tragic events cast a shadow of fear and mistrust. The owners of the building where the community held prayers asked them to leave. This act of discrimination, fueled by prejudice, became the catalyst for change. Determined to establish a permanent home, the community rallied together. They learned that the TD Bank building at 168 Dundas St. West was going on the market. Through hard work and negotiation, they secured the building. An anonymous professional athlete donated half a million dollars. This incredible act of generosity, combined with community fundraising, allowed the purchase of the property in 2002, establishing Masjid Toronto. Today, Masjid Toronto stands as a beacon of hope and community. It’s a place where hundreds gather each week for daily prayers and Friday congregations. It’s also a center for community events, a weekend children’s school, and various classes. Masjid Toronto is a place where faith transcends boundaries and where community thrives.
