Beneath the modern veneer of Tokyo lies a history stretching back centuries. We are standing in Shimo-Igusa. This railway station is more than just a transport hub. It is a portal to a past.

Shimo-Igusa Station opened its doors on April 16 1927. It quickly became a vital part of the community. The Seibu Shinjuku Line serves it. This line connects Shimo-Igusa to the heart of Tokyo and beyond.

Before the station existed, Shimo-Igusa was already a place with a story. Originally, it was part of Igusa Village. In the early Edo period, Igusa Village split. It became Kami-Igusa and Shimo-Igusa. Shimo means lower. Kami means upper.

The name “Igusa” itself has several interesting origin stories. One theory suggests the area was once a swamp. Rushes called “Igusa” grew wild there. These rushes were a key ingredient for making Tatami mats. Another story links the name to a local farming pioneer.

Life in Shimo-Igusa has always been closely tied to Tokyo. Access to the city center improved after the station opened. More people moved here. Yet, Shimo-Igusa has retained its unique character. Unlike other areas, it avoided major redevelopments. The traditional shopping street remains a testament to its past.

Shimo-Igusa is a quiet residential area. It is known for its safety. Crime rates are low making it ideal for families and single women. The Seibu Railway Shinjuku Line provides convenient access to central Tokyo.

The journey to Seibu-Shinjuku Station takes only about 17 minutes without any transfers. You can reach Shibuya Station with one transfer in approximately 35 minutes. Ikebukuro Station is about 26 minutes away with one transfer.

For those who enjoy late nights, trains run to Shimo-Igusa Station until late. The last train from Seibu-Shinjuku Station departs around 0:17. Buses also operate from Shimo-Igusa Station. The Kanto Bus provides access to other areas. Shakujii Koen Station is about 17 minutes away. Asagaya Station is around 15 minutes. Ogikubo Station is approximately 18 minutes.

Shimo-Igusa offers affordable living. Rent prices are lower than in other parts of Suginami Ward. You can find apartments for single residents starting from 60000 yen.

Several supermarkets are conveniently located near the station. Some are open late into the night. Residents can easily find what they need. Restaurants are mainly located in front of the station. Chain restaurants provide convenient options for dining out.

Shimo-Igusa Station is marked as SS10 on the Seibu Railway Line. In 2013, it served an average of 23764 passengers daily. The station consists of two ground-level side platforms. These platforms serve two tracks.

Today, Shimo-Igusa is a blend of old and new. The station connects residents to the city. The quiet streets and traditional shops offer a peaceful escape. As we leave Shimo-Igusa Station, remember the village that was divided, the rushes that gave it its name and the people who call it home.
