The story of Newlands began in 1694. The area’s first licensed brewery was built. It was near freshwater springs in Papenboom. The springs were vital. They powered water mills.

In 1700, Governor Willem van der Stel received land. He named it De Nieuwe Land. It became a country residence. It included a lodge, a garden, and an oak plantation. The Dutch East India Company owned it. High-ranking officials lived here.

In 1791, the property was sold to private individuals. It returned to government ownership in 1805. It was resold in 1826. It has remained in private hands since.

During the 1860s, the Colonial Government leased the property. It became a country residence for Cape Governors. The village of Newlands was established around this time. A railway line from Salt River reached Newlands in 1864.

Newlands Forest is a wonderful haven. Locals exercise their dogs here. The walk to Kirstenbosch is a good four-hour trail. It is steep at some points.

The Montebello Design Centre is also in Newlands. It features art studios, a craft shop, and a restaurant. It also has a Bushman Gallery. Cecil Michaelis bequeathed the land. The buildings once belonged to Ohlssons Brewery.

Newlands is home to respected schools. Westerford High School and Sans Souci Girls High School are here. SACS Boys High School is also nearby.
