Hidden amongst the hills of Braemar Hill stands Quarry Bay School a venerable institution steeped in history. This isn’t just any school. It’s the oldest English Schools Foundation primary school in Hong Kong. Imagine the generations of children who have walked these very grounds.
Founded in 1926 the school initially served the children of expatriate dockyard workers. Its first home was at 986 King’s Road Quarry Bay. Life wasn’t always easy for Quarry Bay School. World War II forced a temporary move to the Stanley Internment Camp. A disruption but not a defeat. The school persevered.
After the war Quarry Bay School moved to temporary premises in Victoria Barracks before finally settling into its current beautiful location on Braemar Hill in 1984. This move marked a new chapter in the school’s history. A time capsule filled with children’s artwork messages and other mementos was buried in 1997. It remains a secret waiting to be unearthed in 2027 for the 30th anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover. A poignant reminder of the school’s enduring legacy.
The original Quarry Bay School building at 986 King’s Road stands as a Grade III historic building since 2010. It silently testifies to the school’s rich past. Today Quarry Bay School boasts approximately 720 students from diverse backgrounds. It embraces the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. This ensures that every child has a world class education.
Ms Sue Yee the current principal continues the school’s legacy. She follows in the footsteps of principals Mina Dunstan and Debra Gardiner.
