Nestled high above Saulgrub, the Fatimakapelle offers a breathtaking view of the Ammertal valley. This small chapel holds a powerful story of faith, resilience, and gratitude. The Fatimakapelle wasn’t always here. Its story began during the tumultuous years of World War II. Josef Leismiller, a young man from Saulgrub, was drafted into the war in 1939. Facing the uncertainties of battle, he made a vow: if he returned home safely, he would build a chapel. After five long years as a prisoner of war in Minsk, Josef finally returned to Saulgrub in 1949. True to his promise, he began planning his chapel. Four years later, he embarked on a pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal. He brought back a statue of the Virgin Mary, a symbol of hope and divine protection. With the help of a friend, a skilled mason, Josef started building the Fatimakapelle. It was a labor of love, a testament to his faith and survival. The chapel was consecrated on September 12, 1954. The Fatimakapelle stands as a poignant reminder of a promise kept. It serves as a beacon of hope for the community, a symbol of peace in a world that has seen too much war. Inside the Fatimakapelle, the statue of Our Lady of Fatima, brought back from Portugal, graces the altar. The simple yet elegant design of the chapel complements the serene beauty of its surroundings. The Fatimakapelle is more than just a building. It is a living story, a testament to one man’s faith and resilience.
