“Whirlwind of steel and aluminum” is how I’d describe Alice Aycock’s Hoop-La. Right here in Stockholm’s Princess Estelle Sculpture Park, it stands as a testament to the power and beauty of nature’s energy.
Hoop-La was the first piece acquired for this very park. Princess Estelle’s Cultural Foundation recognized its unique allure immediately. It is a sculpture that embodies the raw energy of wind and water.
Alice Aycock took inspiration from scientific phenomena. Nature’s raw power is evident in every twist and turn. Engineering techniques combine to create this dynamic artwork.
Aycock experienced wild storms and fierce tornadoes. These encounters sparked both fear and fascination. Hoop-La captures that duality. It represents both the extreme weather phenomena and the feeling of being swept up in them.
The sculpture’s swirling forms create a hypnotic effect. Every angle offers a new perspective. Its architectural construction is impressive. Close up, the details resemble sharp propeller blades or rosebud petals.
Movement is key to Aycock’s work. She sees things as constantly transforming. Nothing is fixed. Nothing is unchangeable. She has always been fascinated by wind, cloud formations and smoke. Fluid dynamics and wave theory also inspire her. Her art revolves around these themes in various ways.
Hoop-La stands 580 centimeters tall. It is 730 centimeters wide and 520 centimeters deep. The sculpture is made of powder-coated aluminum and steel. It visually represents turbulence.
The sculpture is part of Aycock’s Turbulence series. This series embodies wind and water energy. These structures become visual metaphors.
Hoop-La was part of Alice Aycock’s temporary solo exhibition. It was acquired by the Princess Estelle Cultural Foundation. This acquisition was made possible through donations from PREKS Founding Group. Prince Daniel inaugurated the sculpture on June 7, 2020. The inauguration was a digital ceremony.
