Remember that time Target opened at Centerpoint Mall? That was quite a moment. Centerpoint Mall in Toronto. A retail giant. It wasn’t always called Centerpoint though. Did you know it first opened its doors in 1966? Back then it was Towne and Countrye Square. A much smaller mall than the one we see today. It boasted Sayvette and Super City Discount Foods. Think of it. No big box stores. Just smaller shops.
The mall grew. The original Super City became a two-story Zellers. Then The Bay arrived in 1974 adding to the mall’s presence. Sayvette eventually closed becoming Woolco then Super Centre then Loblaws. Quite the transformation. A Miracle Mart became a Canadian Tire. Zellers closed in 2012 making way for Target. A brief period of Target excitement. All Target stores closed in 2015. Then Lowe’s opened in the space. It only lasted a short time though. Now Canada Computers sits there. A constant state of flux. A reflection of retail changes in Toronto.
Centerpoint Mall changed names in 1990. The current name Centerpoint Mall now became official. The mall is massive. Over 635000 square feet of retail space. It is one of the biggest in Toronto. It has 137 stores a food court. It’s a hub. A place for families to gather. A convenient location at Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue. Over 130000 cars pass through daily. People come from near and far. Centerpoint Mall has always served its community. It has survived changes. It has seen trends come and go.
But change is coming again. In December 2021 plans were submitted to redevelop the property. They plan to demolish Centerpoint Mall. To replace it with a mixed-use development. It will include residential retail office space and a park. The end of an era. The end of a shopping centre. A transition to something new. But for now this is Centerpoint Mall. A vibrant part of Toronto’s history. A testament to the ever-changing city. What will the future hold? We’ll have to wait and see.
