Whispers of faith echo here. This is the Vancouver Chinese Evangelical Free Church. Its story begins not in grand cathedrals but in the hearts of a community. In 1975 former members of Hong Kong Evangelical Free Churches answered a call. They established the Vancouver Chinese Evangelical Free Church. The first service a Chinese Speaking Sunday worship was held on March 2 1975. It wasn’t in a magnificent building. It was in Nanaimo. The church’s humble beginnings reflect the strength of its community. The congregation found acceptance. They joined the Evangelical Free Church of Canada in November 1975.
This wasn’t just about worship. It was about building a home away from home. An English Speaking Congregation started in 1978. Children of the original members formed its core. Today this congregation boasts an impressive average Sunday attendance. Over 150 members gather for worship. Over 220 attend Sunday school. This includes everyone from preschoolers to young adults.
The Vancouver Chinese Evangelical Free Church’s influence extended beyond its walls. It planted three daughter churches. These are located in Richmond Burnaby and Port Coquitlam. This expansion shows the church’s dedication. It’s a dedication to sharing its faith and its community spirit. The church is more than a building. It’s a vibrant community. It includes around 500 adults and 175 children. Around 280 are official members.
The church faced challenges. In 1998 it revised its bylaws and governance. The changes created two Congregation Committees. One is for the English congregation. The other is for the Chinese congregation. This helped the church better serve its diverse community. This innovative approach to organization shows adaptability and foresight. It’s a testament to the church’s commitment to its members.
