Treasure and tragedy intertwine on this tiny island. This is Monte dell’Oro. It is a small island in the northern Venice Lagoon. The island sits along the Silone Canal. It is in the northern part of the Palude della Rosa.

Monte dell’Oro’s name comes from an old legend. Attila was chasing residents after destroying Altino. He supposedly got bogged down in the lagoon’s marshes. Attila lost his war booty. The heaviest cart disappeared into the treacherous sands.

Local Burano fishermen tell tales. They say that at night, Hun soldiers’ spirits guard the cursed treasure. They promise a violent death to anyone seeking it.

Refugees escaping inland erected a Benedictine monastery. They dedicated a church to San Cataldo. The diocese of Torcello’s seminary may have been here.

By the late Middle Ages, the area depopulated. The submerged part shrank. Later, this land was used for a small military post. About fifty soldiers occupied it. It was an intermediate position between major fortifications. Its purpose was to control secondary access channels to the lagoon.

In 1848, Venetian insurgents built a fort. Austrians later expanded it. The Italian army used it during World War I. Today, only a rounded mound remains. There are no traces of old buildings. One can enjoy wild blackberries and dream of hidden treasures here on Monte dell’Oro.

In 1994, the Italian state sold the island to a Sicilian engineer. This marked another chapter in Monte dell’Oro’s long history. The island spans just 0.13 hectares. Monte dell’Oro faces Santa Cristina. It sits near Motta dei Cunicci. That island is three times larger. It is about two kilometers north of Torcello.

The church on Monte dell’Oro was dedicated to Saint Cataldus. It likely originated with the Benedictines. Legend claims gold treasures are buried here. Supposedly, they belonged to Attila. This supposedly explains the island’s name. Legend also says refugees fleeing Attila’s Huns settled here in 452.

In 1848, Venetian revolutionaries built a fortress here. They anticipated an Austrian siege. The island could block the narrow passage of Torcello. Only a few ruins of the fortress remain. The Austrians expanded it after retaking the city.

So, as you stand here on Monte dell’Oro, consider its layered past. Treasure and conflict shaped this small island. From Attila’s lost loot to a strategic military outpost, Monte dell’Oro holds secrets. It whispers tales of Venice’s enduring spirit.
