Did you know this complex was once a place of confinement and control? Now known as the Norma Parker Correctional Centre its story stretches back centuries. The Norma Parker Correctional Centre stands as a reminder of evolving attitudes toward women and children in need of care. Let me tell you about its fascinating past.

Originally this site was part of the Parramatta Female Factory. It opened in 1821. The Female Factory housed female convicts. They awaited assignment to work in the colony. Some were there as punishment for crimes committed in the colony. It was a workhouse and a labor bureau. It was a marriage bureau and regulator of morality. The Female Factory even had a goal in a hospital. Imagine the lives of these women.

Life inside was harsh. Women were divided into classes based on their behavior. The Third Class women faced the toughest conditions. They had their hair closely cropped and endured hard labor. Riots often broke out as women protested mistreatment and insufficient rations.

Transportation of convicts to New South Wales ended in 1840. The Female Factory closed in 1848. But the site’s institutional history continued. The Parramatta Lunatic Asylum opened in its place.

Later in 1844 the Roman Catholic Orphan School was established. It was south of the Female Factory. This school cared for destitute Catholic children. Many had lost parents or lacked guardians. The Orphan School aimed to provide education. It wanted to instill Catholic values.

The Parramatta Girls Industrial School opened in 1887. It replaced similar institutions. The Girls School housed neglected and wayward girls. This included Indigenous girls from the Stolen Generations. The government saw it as their responsibility to care for these vulnerable girls.

Life at the Girls School was difficult. Residents experienced abuse and a lack of emotional support. Over 30000 girls passed through its doors. Girls were trained in domestic work. This prepared them for service. Punishments were harsh. Riots were common.

In 1974 the Girls School closed. Kamballa opened as a shelter for girls with behavioral problems. Taldree became a temporary detention center for young boys. These institutions were short lived.

In 1980 the site transitioned again. It became the Norma Parker Centre. This was a women’s prison. It was named after social worker Norma Parker. The Norma Parker Centre closed in 2008.

Today the Norma Parker Correctional Centre stands vacant. It is a place of difficult heritage and traumatic memory. The site serves as a reminder of Australia’s social welfare history. It recalls the institutionalization of women and children. The Norma Parker Correctional Centre is a place where we can learn about the past. It allows us to reflect on how far we have come in our treatment of the vulnerable.
