Ever wondered about a village’s connection to a king’s last act? Welcome to Vyšehořovice. This unassuming village boasts a history stretching back to 1178. That’s right the very last year of King Soběslav II’s reign. He gifted the local parish to the Vyšehrad Chapter a grand gesture before his passing.

Vyšehořovice isn’t just about its ancient roots. It’s a place where history whispers through its stones. The original stone church of St Martin stands testament to this. Its Romanesque and Gothic elements hint at a medieval past possibly built under the patronage of the Vyšehrad Chapter who held the right to appoint local priests. Imagine the village priest the church’s stone walls echoing with centuries of prayers and sermons.

From the 14th century onward written records abound. Local lords the Vladykas of Vyšehořovice left their mark. Their coat of arms featured an oak branch a symbol still resonating in the village’s identity. One notable member Havel’s son Budislav held the prestigious post of public notary. He even served as a cleric for the first Archbishop of Prague Arnošt of Pardubice quite an impressive career.

Vyšehořovice was famous for its quarry. From the time of Charles IV the village’s sandstone was used to build significant Prague landmarks. Think St Vitus Cathedral Charles Bridge even some of the Old Town’s houses. This stone trade continued into the 19th century supplying building materials for bridges far and wide. Vyšehořovice sandstone was even considered for the National Theatre’s construction. Although ultimately deemed less suitable than another type of sandstone.

But Vyšehořovice has another claim to fame. The area is rich in fossils. 19th century paleontologists flocked here to study the remarkable plant fossils unearthed during quarrying. You can still see some of these ancient botanical treasures in exhibits at the National Museum and beyond.

Beyond its quarries and fossils the village life of Vyšehořovice thrived. Two ponds provided recreation and livelihood. The older one is now a concrete reservoir a testament to the changes that time has brought. The village also possessed a lively community of tradesmen from blacksmiths and bakers to shoemakers and barbers. Three small shops sold mixed goods. Two pubs added to the village’s social scene. A testament to the rich history of Vyšehořovice.

Today Vyšehořovice is a peaceful place. It retains traces of its vibrant past. The remains of the castle the church the unique Gothic-Renaissance bell tower. Each whispers tales of kings tradesmen and discoveries. A journey through Vyšehořovice is a journey through time. A journey into the heart of a village’s rich and multifaceted history.
