Joseph Tanenbaum, a prominent philanthropist, yearned to give back to his hometown. He envisioned a place where observant Jews and those seeking meaning could find solace and connection. He enlisted Rabbi Baruch Taub to help bring this vision to life. In the early 1980s, Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto started with a small group. They met in Rabbi Taub’s home, a testament to the humble beginnings of this now thriving community. The BAYT quickly grew. It expanded to over 200 families by the mid-1980s and now boasts over 800 families. The current building, dedicated in 1988, stands as a beacon of faith and community. Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto has been a place of growth and innovation. Rabbi Manny Klein, the former chazzan, developed the first youth programs. Later, Rabbi Chaim Y. Ackerman introduced new initiatives for young families. Today, Rabbi Shmuel Lesher serves as the assistant rabbi, alongside Youth Directors Rabbi Josh and Laura Stein, ensuring the BAYT continues to nurture future generations. Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto is more than a synagogue. It’s a center for learning and connection. In 2007, it became home to the Kollel Ohr Yosef, named after the visionary Joseph Tanenbaum. This addition further solidified the BAYT’s commitment to Torah study and spiritual growth. Rabbi Taub, the driving force behind the BAYT for 30 years, retired in 2011. He left a legacy of warmth, inclusivity, and spiritual guidance. Now, Rabbi Daniel Korobkin leads the congregation. Beth Avraham Yoseph of Toronto continues to be a cornerstone of the Toronto Jewish community, a place where tradition meets modernity.
