Ever wondered what it feels like to step into an animated world?
Welcome to Sakuragaoka in Tokyo. This calm uptown area is the model for the Ghibli film “Whisper of the Heart”. Though not as famous as other Miyazaki films outside Japan it offers a unique experience. The film tells the story of Shizuku a junior high school girl experiencing love and chasing her dreams. It portrays a typical Japanese middle-class life in the 90s.
Sakuragaoka used to be a normal residential town. But after “Whisper of the Heart” gained popularity it transformed. In 2005 a decade after the film’s release the area was developed into a tourist spot. The goal was to attract fans while respecting the residents’ privacy.
Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station is your gateway. It is located in Tama City. Many people refer to the area as Seiseki-Sakuragaoka though that is technically the station’s name.
Notably the station appears in another Ghibli film “Heisei Tanuki Gassen Pon Poko”. In that film three raccoon dogs disguised as humans arrive at platform 1.
As you explore Sakuragaoka remember “Whisper of the Heart”. The film’s theme song “Country Roads” might echo in your mind. Feel free to hum along but listen closely. You might hear the whisper of your own heart.
One special spot is the Youth Post. It is a monument created by local fans in 2012. The post resembles the antique shop “Chikyuya” from the movie. Here you can mail your dreams and goals on a card. It is located near the west exit of Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station.
Another key location is Irohazaka. This slope appears when Shizuku chases the cat Moon. Konpira Shrine is a 15-minute walk from the station. The shrine features a love fortune teller as homage to the movie.
Sakuragaoka Rotary also played a role in the film. This is where Shizuku searches for Moon. The coffee shop Sakuragaoka Jashumon once stood here. It served as the model for “Chikyuya”. Though the coffee shop closed in 2012 the area still evokes the movie’s atmosphere.
Today department stores and shopping centers surround the station. Local cafes offer a classic antique atmosphere. Walking through Sakuragaoka you will be moved by the real-life version of this animated world. So watch the movie download a guide map and visit Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station. Experience the magic for yourself.
