“Car-rang-gel,” the Gayamagal people called this place long before it was known as North Head Sanctuary. It stood as a monolith. It towered above the eastern plains. The Creator, Baiame, watched over her lands from this sacred place.

Welcome to North Head Sanctuary. It is a place of dramatic cliffs and coastal bushland. It marks the northern entrance to Sydney Harbour. Today, we explore its layers of history and natural beauty.

For the Gayamagal people, North Head was deeply significant. It was a place for spiritual ceremonies. Medicine men and women, healers known as Koradgee, performed rituals here. Rock engravings, art, campsites, burials, and middens remind us of their enduring connection.

The First Fleet, led by Captain Arthur Phillip, first contacted the local Aboriginal people here in 1788. This marked the beginning of significant change for the Gayamagal.

Later, North Head became a place of quarantine. From 1881 to 1925, it isolated people suffering from deadly epidemic diseases. The Third Quarantine Cemetery is a stark reminder. Over 240 people were buried here. They succumbed to smallpox and other illnesses.

Walk through the cemetery. Reflect on the lives lost and the efforts to contain these diseases. Consider the isolation and fear experienced by those quarantined. The views of Sydney Harbour offer a poignant contrast.

North Head also played a crucial role in Australia’s military history. During World War II, it was part of a defence system. Military fortifications were built here to protect Sydney Harbour. North Fort is a key historical site. It was integral to Sydney’s defence.

Descend into the 200-meter-long military tunnel complex. Discover heritage gun emplacements. Explore the once-secret underground bunker. Imagine the strategic planning that occurred here.

Today, North Head Sanctuary is also a nature refuge. Dedicated walking and bike tracks allow us to explore diverse flora and fauna. The dunes support one of Sydney’s few remaining patches of Eastern Suburbs Banksia.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife. North Head is home to echidnas and reptiles. Over 100 species of birds thrive here. Look for the little wattlebird and the New Holland Honeyeater. The endangered long-nosed bandicoots also call this place home.

Take the Sanctuary Loop. It is a circuit trail completed in under two hours. The loop offers exceptional coastal views from the Third Quarantine Cemetery. Lookouts along the Fairfax Walk reveal endangered flora and fauna.

Australia’s Memorial Walk is a place for reflection. Monuments commemorate Australia’s involvement in conflicts over the last 150 years.

Before you leave, visit the Visitor Centre near North Fort. Friendly volunteers offer insider tips and answer questions.

You can also refuel at Bella Vista Cafe or Yorky Coffee. Bella Vista offers Italian cuisine with harbour views. Yorky Coffee serves coffee and Latino American food from a retro caravan.

As you leave North Head Sanctuary, remember its many layers. It is a place of indigenous significance, a quarantine site, and a military stronghold. Now, it is a sanctuary for both nature and people. The North Head Sanctuary Master Plan guides its future. It protects and revitalises this unique destination.
