Step into Älvrosgården, a charming farmstead that has been painstakingly reassembled here on Skansen. You might be surprised to know that Älvrosgården wasn’t originally built here in Stockholm, but was actually salvaged from the remote region of Härjedalen in northern Sweden. The Älvros Farmstead, as it was known then, was a symbol of life in the area at the turn of the 19th century. Imagine living in a harsh, remote landscape, surrounded by wildlife like bears, wolves and elk, and growing barley in a soil not easily amenable to farming. Life in this area was challenging and resource-oriented. While the Älvros Farmstead was disassembled and reassembled on Skansen in 1915-1916 to preserve it, the story of how it was acquired is fascinating. Skansens founding visionary, Artur Hazelius made the bold decision of saving the farm from demolition, as it would provide a perfect glimpse into the northern Swedish way of life. The main farmhouse, built circa 1600, is a beautiful example of a parstuga, a traditional two-room house with a separate chamber connecting the rooms. The farmhouse was once the heart of the Älvros Farmstead, a place where families gathered, meals were prepared, and stories were told. Today, when you visit, take a few moments to imagine the sounds of the farm: the lowing of cows, the clucking of chickens, and the occasional bark of a dog echoing through the air. Feel a sense of the history that surrounds you and let your imagination transport you back to a time of simpler living.
