On a sunny day in July 2024, a special event unfolded in Tokyo. The Mahatma Gandhi Statue was unveiled at Freedom Plaza in Edogawa. A bust of Gandhi, cast in bronze, now stands as a testament to his enduring legacy. The unveiling ceremony was attended by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who was in Japan for the Quad Foreign Ministers’ meeting. Edogawa Mayor Takeshi Saito, Ambassador of India to Japan Sibi George, and other dignitaries also graced the occasion. A group of schoolchildren sang Gandhi’s beloved prayer, “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram,” adding a touch of serenity to the proceedings. The Mahatma Gandhi Statue is located in Edogawa ward, home to Tokyo’s “Little India” neighborhood, where approximately 3,000 Indians reside. Jaishankar emphasized the global significance of Gandhi’s message of peace and non-violence. He noted that Gandhi’s principles are particularly relevant in a world grappling with conflict and polarization. The minister also highlighted Gandhi’s role as a prophet of sustainable growth and inclusiveness. Mayor Saito announced that the park where the Mahatma Gandhi Statue stands would soon be renamed Gandhi Park, further cementing the bond between India and Japan. Jaishankar expressed his hope that “Little India” would continue to grow and thrive. He acknowledged the Indian community’s role in strengthening the relationship between the two nations.
