Have you ever wondered what secrets lie behind the imposing facade of The Scots College? The Scots College stands proudly in Bellevue Hill, a testament to a rich history and tradition. It’s not just a school. It’s a living story, whispered from generation to generation of “Old Scotsmen”. The Scots College began not in the grandeur of Bellevue Hill, but in the humble, modified walls of a former hotel near Botany Bay in 1893. Three visionaries, Archibald Gilchrist, William “Fighting Mac” Dill-Macky, and Arthur Aspinall, dared to dream of a school for boys, a place where they could be worthy of their forefathers. The motto, “Utinam Patribus Nostris Digni Simus,” reflects this ambition. The Scots College’s journey to Bellevue Hill was prompted by a rather unusual neighbor: a newly opened racecourse. The bustling activity proved a bit too distracting for the budding scholars, so the school relocated to its current, more tranquil location in 1895. The early days at Bellevue Hill were a time of both challenge and character-building. Bushfires were a frequent occurrence, and lessons would be interrupted so students could assist in fighting the flames. The Scots College even has a connection to Bathurst! During World War II, fearing Japanese bombardment, the entire school temporarily relocated west of the Great Dividing Range. This temporary campus eventually became the independent The Scots School, Bathurst. Fast forward to 1975, and The Scots College faced another dramatic event: a fire that gutted the Assembly Hall. While officially attributed to an electrical fault, rumors persist that it was started by students experimenting with fireworks. Thankfully, no one was injured. Today, The Scots College has expanded to five campuses, each contributing to its legacy. From Bellevue Hill to Glengarry in the Kangaroo Valley, the school continues to provide a unique and comprehensive education for boys. The Scots College isn’t just a place of learning.
