Hidden in plain sight, the Risiera di San Sabba in Trieste masks a grim history. This seemingly ordinary building, a former rice-husking factory, became a place of unspeakable horrors during World War II. The Risiera di San Sabba was not just another concentration camp. It was the only extermination camp in Italy with its own crematorium. Established on October 20, 1943, by the Nazis after their occupation of northern Italy, the Risiera became a key transit point for deportations to Auschwitz, Buchenwald, and Dachau. More than 25,000 people were deported from here. The Risiera di San Sabba also became a site of torture and execution for anti-fascists, partisans, and Jews.

The Risiera di San Sabba stands as a chilling reminder of the Nazi’s brutal efficiency. While the exterior lacked the typical watchtowers and barbed wire fences, inside, the Nazis transformed the rice mill into a police detention camp. The “death cell” held those awaiting execution, while seventeen small cells crammed up to six prisoners each. Workshops for tailoring, carpentry, and shoemaking provided a grim facade of normalcy, masking the horrors occurring within. The most terrifying feature of the Risiera di San Sabba was its crematorium, designed by Erwin Lambert, the architect of similar structures in Polish extermination camps. Operational from April 4, 1944, it erased the remains of thousands of victims, their ashes scattered into the sea.

The Risiera di San Sabba’s story didn’t end with its liberation on April 29, 1945. Two days prior, the fleeing Nazis attempted to destroy the crematorium and hide their crimes. However, the stench of burning flesh lingered in the air, a haunting reminder of the atrocities committed. The number of victims remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from 2,000 to over 5,000. In 1976, a trial was held in Trieste to address the crimes committed at the Risiera di San Sabba. The camp’s commander, Joseph Oberhauser, was sentenced to life imprisonment in absentia, a verdict he never served.

Today, the Risiera di San Sabba is a national monument and museum, open to the public. Its stark walls and preserved cells offer a visceral connection to the past. The Risiera di San Sabba stands not only as a memorial to the victims, but also as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and a stark warning against the dangers of hatred and intolerance.
